When David Webb left his native Asheville, North Carolina at age 16 he set his sights on finding fame and fortune in New York City. Armed with an incredible talent for design, Webb lacked credit and had no way of obtaining a loan. In 1948 he met Nina Silberstein, and, although it was almost unheard of for a woman to start a business at that time, she was able to secure the necessary financing. Together they formed David Webb, Inc. and their association quickly grew into the standard bearer of American jewelry. Webb’s primary strength was design, so he gathered jewelers to the company who were willing to execute his ideas. In the early years these men and women had varying skills as artisans, but they all shared a desire to be unique when it came to their craft, and they all wanted to take chances by working with materials outside the mainstream. Bold design, exotic animals, striking enamels and impeccable craftsmanship became the trademarks of the David Webb name, and their 57th Street store quickly became a landmark.
The design inspirations came from many sources, but the David Webb approach was always jewelry as art, not commerce. By turning to enamel and colored stones, any fantasy could be realized. Looking to the animal kingdom the designers were able to create not only the image of an animal, but also to capture the feeling of that animal—one could almost see the movement of a cat or sense the grace and speed of a horse in the pieces. Inspiration also came from ancient Greek, Chinese, and Egyptian culture. Using modern techniques and materials on classic designs, David Webb designers created a bold, dramatic look that has carried through to today.
