Astrid Björk

Astrid Björk was born in 1966, in Germany, to an artistic family, and moved to Sweden with her mother when she was five years old. As a young child, Astrid was inspired by the artistic influences she received from her mother and grandfather, both of whom had classical training in art. Astrid attended "Tillskärarakademien" with the goal of becoming a fashion designer. Her plans changed, however, when she studied at Nyckelviken's Art School where she discovered that metal was more interesting than textiles and she applied to the department of metal design at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Several years later, with a Master of Fine Arts from that school, she started to work as a silversmith and jewellery designer. Astrid's philosphy is to create simple jewellery for everyday wear, jewellery that allows the customer to shape a personal style. She is renowned for her use of silver and semi-precious stones. In the winter of 2004, Astrid attracted a great deal of attention in Japan after being featured on a Japanese television program about Swedish designers, and a Japanese agent soon contacted her. In February the first shop opened in Tokyo with most of Astrid Björk’s collection.
