Corinne Day's photographs have influenced a generation of fashion and documentary image-makers. Her pictures unflinchingly document her life and relationships with a realist snap-shot-aesthetic, representing a youth culture set against the glamour of fashion and avoiding fictionalisation or voyeurism.
Self-taught, Day first became known for the images she published in 1990 in The Face of her friend Kate Moss. Trawling through the London agencies, she spotted a 14year-old waif from Croydon. The scrawny beauty of Kate Moss and Days raw depiction of her caught the fashion zeitgeist of 1990s Britain. The series launched what later became known as 'grunge-style' or 'heroin-chic'. Day photographed her again in 1993 for British Vogue and it was these shots Moss a hollow-chested, child-woman, painfully thin, in slight Ann Summers underwear and American tan tights, at home in her drab, west London flat which changed the complexion of fashion photography and unleashed an international controversy.
