Amano

Amano was started by James and Michelle in December of 1988, trading from a market stall in the well known Camden market in north London. In 1990 Amano opened a shop in Camden which proved a great success and which continues to thrive today. In teaming up with Toshy and Yumiko in Bolivia, Amano was able to bring the UK a truly fresh approach to knitwear: colour, texture and freshness exuded from the garments.
Developing new designs and colours and having a firm commitment to the quality of the products enabled sales to grow year on year.
1994 saw the first knitwear produced from recycled fibres. Beautiful chunky sweaters knit from recycled denim, denim discarded from the factories and that normally would have gone to landfill, was turned into a denim yarn mixed with wool and cotton. Other unusual sources such as plastic bottles have also been used that produced a soft fleecy handle.
