Julian Smith, who is already exporting to New York, established his label, Julian Johannesburg, in 1993 and is known for his elegant, understated fashion and virtuosi bead-working, which he is applying to gold bead jewellery. Malcolm Klûk, who studied design in London and worked for many years as a fashion editor, launched his label of contemporary feminine fashions, Klûk, in 2000 and has designed a modern gold jewellery collection inspired by sea life. “The clothing and gold jewellery concepts from Clive, Julian and Klûk are very strong and fresh for New York and directionally correct in terms of where American fashion and jewellery is going,” commented Nina Garcia, Fashion Director of Elle USA and member of the selection committee. “Elle South Africa teamed up with AngloGold on the project because both companies want to promote the exceptional fashion and jewellery talent in South Africa which is untapped internationally and in need of an export boost,” explained Nadine Rubin, Editor of Elle South Africa. “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is a platform where three of South Africa’s leading designers will be showcased on an international stage to open international export channels.” Added on: 03-8-2003 Hits: 2468
