Costume Designers Guild

The Costume Designers Guild was founded in 1953 by a group of 30 motion picture costume designers. Today, its membership includes motion picture, television, commercial, and stage costume designers throughout the world and totals over 530 members. The organization was created in response to changing needs of the movie industry. From 1953 to 1976 the Guild functioned as a small independent organization, promoting costume designers and negotiating contracts with the major studios to protect them with a minimum wage and a health plan as they made the transition from employees to freelancer designers. A Costume Designer creates the look of a character in film or television. This requires detailed research and director's vision. Often, the costumes set fashion trends that inspire fashion designers and impact world culture.
