Tadashi Shoji

The fashion world's Tadashi Shoji wanted echoes of traditional Japan in his midcentury modern house. His exacting standards required creative give and take. Fashion designer Tadashi Shoji outfits beauty queens, and he knows what he likes when he sees it. He has sketched thousands of sexy gowns on paper, then fussed with the gossamer fabric until the folds were flattering, flirtatious. But during a yearlong remodel of his house in the Pasadena hills, he found that some designs aren't so easy to alter.
Tadashi evening designs attracting many celebrated personalities through the years as Halle Berry, Celine Dion, Tyra Banks, Claudia Schiffer, Minnie Driver, Carmen Electra, Faith Evens and Queen Latifah as she hosts for VH-1's 7 Days of Oscar. Tadashi Shoji & Associates, Inc., Los Angeles based firm, was founded in 1982, as a manufacturer of better dresses and luxury eveningwear at prices characteristically below other designer labels. Today, the Tadashi evening collection is sold worldwide, including Europe and Asia. In the U.S. his account base now includes more than 3000 major department and specialty stores as Sak's Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Macy's. Tadashi Shoji is the designer, sole owner and President. He was born and raised in Sandai, Japan. At an early age, he showed a talent for painting and drawing and he went to Tokyo, where he pursued his studies in fine art, especially the emerging field of contemporary art. Tadashi was recommended for an apprenticeship with the country's leading contemporary art in Japan. While working with Takamatsu, Tadashi had ambitions of living and working in the midst of the contemporary art scene of New York. Then a twist of fate landed him in Los Angeles for a visit and he stayed. A friend suggested he should continue his education with more of a career focus and Fashion Design immediately caught his interest. During his studies, Tadashi was presented with the opportunity to work with famed costume designer, Bill Whitton. Thadashi soon found himself in the middle of an intense industry, working with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, the Jacksons and Earth Wind and Fire. After graduation, Tadashi began work in an entry level position for a clothing manufacturer and started to make his way up. After several years in the industry, he noticed a void in the women's market - special occasion dresses at affordable prices. It was time to go out on his own. And he met with immediate success. In 1982, his collection was picked up by Bergdorf Goodman. Saks Fifth Avenue soon followed. Today, the Tadashi label continues to be carried at upscale retailers and worn on the back of well-dressed women worldwide.
