Jeremy Laing interned with Preen and Alexander McQueen, and subsequently worked with McQueen for five seasons. His “Petit Debut” collection, prepared in a mere three weeks and presented last February at the cutting-edge gallery of the Lower East Side, Participant Inc, was the underground hit of the New York Fall 2005 show season, though not commercially available. For Spring and Summer 2006, Laing returns to New York with a womenswear collection inspired by the couture method and theoretical cubism. Coats, skirts and dresses are constructed three-dimensionally, on the body, creating abstract shapes. A dress is made by walking through a square of cloth. Appearing un-modified from the front, in profile the body’s planes merge or overlap. Similarly, through clever cutting, sleeves become epaulettes and pleats become suspenders, while extended outer layers wrap to meet shrunken inner layers, and vice versa, blurring garment edges. Laing’s simple but complex clothes are rendered light in parachute or washed silk and are supported by 4” hems, made buoyant with horsehair braid. Tailored pieces, in summer-weight wool, a luxurious silk-wool blend and a custom-made man’s necktie silk, are hand-finished with voile interlinings, another couture touch, and paired with parachute silk summer union-suits, hip-waders or menswear-inspired pants. This season wholesale orders are welcome. Laing is the subject of upcoming pieces in Bon (Sweden), *Surface, the premiere issue of Another Man, and his work is featured in the September Dazed and Confused cover story. Laing spent his childhood on a Canadian army base in Germany. Having studied in London and Toronto, he now lives and works in Toronto. His previous projects include The Westside Stitches Couture Club, a sewing circle with performance art tendencies, and (with Will Munro) an exquisitely costumed collaborative performance/installation/video project that is the subject of an upcoming book. In the past Laing has been included in exhibitions at Deitch Projects, Passerby at Gavin Brown's Enterprise, and Art In General, all in New York, and the 2004 Liverpool Biennial.
