Designer Kathlin Argiro realized her passion for fashion at just fourteen years old. Having been invited to her first high school dance, her only thoughts were of what she would wear. Inspired with a vision of the “perfect” dress she quickly discovered that her taste far exceeded her pocket book. She began sketching her dress for the dance and found that once she put pencil to paper she could not stop until her creation became reality.
Apprenticed by a bridal designer in her hometown of Alexandria, Virginia, Kathlin soon began to create custom dresses for her high school classmates and peddle her first ready-to-wear line, printed cotton sarongs, in the school cafeteria. Fueled by her first hot seller -- she sold fifty skirts in just three days -- Kathlin opened a booth at an Old Town, Alexandria farmer’s market, where she quickly built a private clientele and convinced local shops to carry her merchandise.
Despite her achievements, the budding designer knew that the key to fashion success was a New York education. Studying at the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Kathlin worked tirelessly, maintaining private clients while broadening her industry knowledge through internships with Geoffrey Beene, Don and Caroline Simonellii, Marianne Novobatsky, and the pioneering fashion and style program “Style with Elsa Klench.” She graduated with several awards, including the prestigious Gold Thimble Award for eveningwear.
Following graduation, Kathlin worked as a design assistant for Donna Morgan where she learned what it takes to design and produce a volume dress collection. She then leapt into her dream job - working as design assistant to one of America’s last couturiers, Arnold Scaasi, under whose tutelage, she learned the old school techniques of couture dressmaking, the impact of unexpected, vivid color and a vast knowledge of the finest fabric resources in the world. Her next pivotal position in the fashion industry was with eveningwear designer Carmen Marc Valvo, where, as head designer she was instrumental in developing his couture collection.
After paying her dues for five years, Kathlin took the final step toward fulfilling her ultimate dream -- with a little prodding and a lot of support from her sister and business partner, Megan, she opened her own fashion house on Seventh Avenue, launching her first collection in November, 1997. Six years later “the Argiro sisters” (as they are referred to by industry insiders) are living their dream. Kathlin Argiro dresses are currently carried in Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom’s, and countless specialty stores throughout the country and have been featured in Vogue, In Style, Women's Wear Daily, The New York Times, Glamour, The Washington Post, Washingtonian, and Baltimore Magazine.
