Frank Usher

Frank Usher became a business concern in the late 1940s, and is well-known for the High Street copies and adaptions of Paris design that he produced for a middle-class clientele. The quality of Frank Usher design can vary a great deal, since he has the dubious honour of having produced one of the most unattractive dresses that I've ever seen. (a bronze lamé matelasse cocktail sack-dress of 1960, now in the Killerton House collection), and I have seen some very cheap and nasty-looking 1970s and 1980s polyester dresses which, frankly, are a disgrace to the label. Other than that, I know very little about it. I am assuming that Frank Usher is a person, but for all I know, he could not even exist, like Lilli Ann. The label is still in business, producing expensive but good quality formal wear. According to magazine advertisements in 1990, Usher was "exciting by day, extravagant by evening".
