Lowie was set up by fashion marketer and designer Bronwyn Lowenthal with the first range going into stores in winter 2002. From her own love of travel, the designer has coined a mix of boho, nostalgic and urban styling to create quirky ranges for those who appreciate quality hand-made products. Bronwyn fell in love with the mystique of traditional techniques for manufacture and hand-finishing, with a particluar love of Turkish knitting. Much of her inspiration for the winter ranges stems from knitted mountain village slippers, where each Turkish village has its own colours and designs. The slippers were used to define tribe, rank, sex and age and were often used to send messages through symbols. Lowie now employs over 100 village workers to manufacture the almost famous winter knit ranges.
Aimed at boutiques and the upper end bridge shopper, the first range for winter 2002 was picked up immediately by House of Fraser, Urban Outfitters, Birkenstock and The Dispensary, capitalising on the chunky hand-knits and the ethnicity of that season. Since then the brand has grown to be stocked in over 20 stores in 5 countries including the UK, Japan, France, Begium and Australia.
